The self-service principle and your responsibility for having a ticket for the train

In Denmark, the handling of tickets in public transport is based on a self-service principle.

There is free access to the platform and boarding both S-trains and long-distance and regional trains. This makes it easy for customers to use this type of transport. This also means that everyone can enter the train, regardless of whether you have a ticket or not.

For you as a customer, this means that you yourself are responsible for having a valid ticket before you board the train. You can buy the ticket at the station, e.g. in vending machines, in 7-Eleven stores at the stations, in DSB Sales & Service, or via SMS and the internet, e.g. via the DSB app and via dsb.dk. If you are traveling on a travel card, you must remember to check in the card before you start your journey.

To secure ticket revenue and prevent fraud, the ticket is checked on the train by a DSB employee. If you do not have a valid ticket, DSB has a statutory right and duty to charge a penalty fare. The penalty fare is DKK 750 and allows you to continue your journey with DSB. The penalty fare must be paid to DSB within 14 days.
